Speyburn Arranta Casks Whisky Aged in Air-Dried Barrels

Speyburn ArrantaMade by Speyburn Distillery, a Speyside Scottish distillery in operation since just before 1900, Speyburn has become a popular Scotch whiskey brand in the United States. Now, they’re getting ready to launch a new expression that seems tailor-made for their American fan base.

The new release is called Speyburn Arranta Casks. It’s a non-age statement whisky, bottled at 92 proof, that has been matured in first fill American oak ex-bourbon barrels that were made from air-dried wood. Speyburn’s Distillery Manager Robert Anderson explained in a statement that

“Air-dried barrels—as opposed to bourbon barrels that are kiln-dried—maintain more moisture and flavor throughout the process. We are excited to offer a new take on the Speyburn taste that you know and love and elevate it for an even bolder flavor that truly over delivers.”

The name of this Scotch, Arranta, is said to mean “bold,” “daring” and “intrepid” in Scottish Gaelic, all qualities we assume the distillery hopes you’ll find in this $40 limited-edition bottling. Here’s where you can hunt one down at retail. Limited official tasting notes for the release are below for your consideration.

Nose: Toffee, vanilla, honey, coconut and spice.

Taste:  Bold and full bodied with a long-lasting finish of spicy, citrus and honey notes.
