Are Scotch Single Malt Tomes A New Trend? Perhaps

When one thinks of packaging normally accompanying entry level Scotches, the first thing which comes to mind is the ubiquitous tube with a removable top lid. John Dewar & Sons, however, seem to be stepping up the game a little bit, and in the process also literally borrowing a page from another distillery, in the recent unveiling of book style packaging for three of its whiskies.

Available to what looks to be a US audience only, a series of so called “single malt tomes” recently debuted on ReserveBar, an American liquor sales website. These three “tomes” take the shape of large, ancient books you open to reveal cut outs holding bottles of whisky and related accessories tied to themes from each of these releases.

Now, if you are thinking you’ve seen this design before, you are right. Isle of Arran Distillers earlier this year launched the first in a trilogy of whiskies in fake books known as The Smugglers’ Series. The first of these, The Illicit Stills, has proven to be a rather successful seller so far from what I’ve seen of it online.

As for the Dewar releases, here are more specific details on each from ReserveBar. Note they are available for shipment to only a limited number of states.

The Deveron Tome ($500):

Crafted for those who love single malts and the sea, this limited-edition volume details the journey of a group of sailors returning from a long voyage on the North Sea. Weather-beaten maps and a hand-written captain’s log give it the worn, rugged feel of the open water. Curious readers can open hidden compartments to discover a bottle of The Deveron 12, a handsome timepiece and a branded Glencairn glass.

Aultmore Tome ($650):

Created to resemble a thick, gripping novel from an ancient library, this limited-edition volume contains a bottle of Aultmore 12, a frosted Glencairn glass and a short story, The Mystery of the Buckie Road. With an embossed cover, vellum pages and brooding, mysterious artwork, this tome has a rich, premium feel. Careful readers can use the enclosed UV light and cryptex to reveal secrets that remain hidden from view.

Royal Brackla Tome ($750):

Because Royal Brackla is the first whisky to be granted a Royal Warrant, this limited-edition volume is rich in history and tradition. The embossed leather cover opens to an announcement of that original decree. A removable serving tray houses a bottle of Royal Brackla 12, branded letter opener and engraved wooden box. Dig deeper to discover two crystal-cut rocks glasses and a sensory kit to highlight the notes of the drink divine.
