New 14 Year Old The Glenlivet Scotch Finished In Ex-Cognac Casks

The Glenlivet Scotch single malt whisky distillery, owned by spirits giant Pernod Ricard, has plenty of whisky to throw around, allowing this operation plenty of latitude in what they release. One such variant is the exploration of finishing expressions in other types of casks, as is what has happened recently with the debut of a new bottling finished in ex-cognac casks.

The new The Glenlivet 14 Year Old, according to those behind it, is being targeted towards “a new generation of whisky drinkers through bold and unconventional flavor combinations and finishing techniques.” It is first aged in first fill American/sherry casks, before being finished for an undisclosed amount of time in ex-cognac casks.

“We crafted The Glenlivet 14 Year Old with the curious single malt community in mind,” said Alan Winchester, The Glenlivet Master Distiller, in a prepared statement. “The beauty of the whisky lover is that their palate is always evolving, searching for the next flavor experience, and we’re proud to add this delicious aged single malt, with portions selectively finished in ex-cognac casks, to our portfolio. The blend of rich Cognac-cask flavor influences and our signature fruity, smooth style are guaranteed to captivate single malt drinkers looking to explore.”

As it stands now plans call for this 14 year old single malt to be a U.S. only release, pricing around $55 per 750 ml bottle. You’ll find some official tasting notes below for your consideration. It should be noted as well The Glenlivet has teamed up with the Purple Heart Foundation (supports service members) as a fundraiser tie-in associated with the bottle packaging’s purple color. For every bottle of The Glenlivet 14 Year Old sold at participating retailers from July 1December 31, 2019, The Glenlivet will donate $1 to the foundation, with a minimum guaranteed donation of $50,000, up to $100,000.
