Macallan Edition No. 1 A New Oak-Happy Scotch Whisky

Macallan Edition No. 1The Macallan distillery has become something of a master of non-age statement Scotch whisky, a status gained through releases like Rare Cask Black and the various 1824 Masters Series bottlings. Joining these now is the new Edition No. 1, the first in a line of limited-edition releases targeted towards American drinkers.

The new Macallan Edition No. 1 is just now coming to retailers, with a price point between $90 and $100. Heralding from the distillery’s new Edition series, it is a single malt whisky said to be drawn from eight distinct European and American oak cask styles and sizes, creating a Scotch with complexity and range.

This natural color whisky, bottled at 48% ABV, was created by Macallan master whisky maker Bob Dalgarno. Tasting notes from the distillery suggest hints of orange, apple and dried fruit on the nose, leading into wood spices on the palate supported by nutmeg, cinnamon and hints of dried ginger and toffee. The finish, meanwhile, is medium to long and lingering.

For those curious about Macallan non-age statement offerings, Macallan Edition No. 1 might be an interesting entry level whisky to consider before diving into the more expensive expressions, such as Rare Cask.
