Latest The Glenlivet Scotch Gets A Caribbean Rum Cask Finish

The world of The Glenlivet Scotch single malt whisky is a very diverse amount of expressions. Cask finishing is in the mix at this Scottish distillery, as we saw last year with the release of a whisky finished in ex-Cognac casks. Finishing is also front in center with one of their latest releases, this time with a decidedly Caribbean twist.

The new The Glenlivet Caribbean Reserve, according to those behind it, is a non-age statement Scotch single malt whisky that’s partially been finished in barrels that once held Caribbean rum. It is being described as a “single malt scotch whisky a tropical twist just in time for summer” and is particularly targeted towards cocktail recipes (we’ve included one below from the brand).

This new Scotch is bottled at 80 proof (40% ABV) and prices around $35 per 750 ml bottle. Official tasting notes for it are as follows:

  • Nose: Sweet notes of pear and red apple meet a fabulous tropical twist of ripe bananas in syrup
  • Palate: Rich caramel toffee notes are followed by mandarin orange, vanilla and honeydew melon
  • Finish: Well balanced and exceptionally smooth

The Glenlivet Caribbean Mai Tai

  • 1 ½ parts The Glenlivet Caribbean Reserve
  • ¾ parts lime juice
  • ½ parts Orange Syrup
  • ½ parts Triple Sec
    • Method: Combine The Glenlivet Reserve Caribbean Reserve, lime juice, orange syrup and Triple Sec in a cocktail shaker. Fill with ice. Shake vigorously for 20 seconds. Strain into an ice-filled rocks glass. Garnish with mint and an orange slice & enjoy.

Whisky Review: The Bruichladdich Thirty

We review The Bruichladdich Thirty, a Scotch single malt aged for three decades in ex-bourbon casks laid down around the time the distillery shuttered for seven years starting in 1994.
