Johnnie Walker Rounds Out Top Shelf Scotch Whisky Collection With 28 Year Old

The John Walker & Sons Private Collection, as we’ve explored in the past, is a series of limited edition, blended Scotch whisky bottlings from the Johnnie Walker brand that sit towards the higher end of the vast portfolio tied to this Diageo label. The collection has now come to its conclusion with the recent debut of a 28 year old expression.

The new John Walker & Sons Private Collection, 28 Year Old Midnight Blend, according to those behind it, is said to contain a specific blend of single malt and grain whiskies that have been aged for a minimum of 28 years. These whiskies, drawn from the myriad of Scotch distilleries Diageo owns (including Strathmillon in Speyside and Caol Ila in Islay), were picked in combination from three vattings to create a product targeted towards those seeking to savor an after dinner drink, or approaching the so-called “midnight” moment.

“Whiskies aged for 28 years are rare, and very special,” said Johnnie Walker Master Blender Jim Beveridge in a prepared statement. “In our search to find the flavours and characteristics necessary for a rich, indulgent Scotch like Midnight Blend, we were very lucky to have access to some of the most mature reserves drawn from the four corners of Scotland. Each individual malt and grain used in the final whisky adds layers of flavour to the 28 Year Old Midnight Blend, leaving hints of fruit, sweet and spice and making it a wonderful final addition to the Private Collection.”

The 28 Year Old Blend, pricing at $750, is bottled at 42.8% ABV and only 3,888 individually numbered decanters have been released. You’ll find official tasting notes below for your consideration, and it is recommended that if you have this as an after dinner drink you consider pairing it with a square of dark chocolate.

Initial aromas of rich citrus, apples, toffee and raisins are followed by the deeper, slowly evolving notes of sweet Islay smoke, spicy woodiness and intense vanilla.

On the palate the texture is luxuriously smooth with the distinctive waxy softness of Clynelish. Indulgent layers of creamy vanilla, caramel and butterscotch sweetness from the mature grain whiskies and American oak are balanced beautifully with an abundance of delicious Speyside and Highland citrus, tropical and fresh fruit notes – mandarin oranges, strawberries, apples and mango.

Enticing hints of spice, European oak rich fruit character and mellow West Coast smokiness appear as the indulgent flavours of the 28 Year Old Midnight Blend gather towards a long, sweet, warming finish.
