Some of Scotland’s distilleries end up in remote locations, which gives them a bit of an extra mystique and charm, despite what you may or may not know about the whiskey they produce. One of these is Isle of Arran Distillery, located on the Isle of Arran in the Firth of Clyde. To celebrate where it heralds from, and to protect a portion of it as well, the distillery has unveiled a limited edition charity whiskey made at the turn of the millennium.
Produced on December 31, 1999, the Isle of Arran Millennium Casks edition is a mix of 35 bourbon barrels and 10 Sherry Hogsheads that will price for around £64.99 per bottle. A portion of the proceeds will go to
the Arran Trust, a conservation charity which funds projects that look after the beautiful landscapes and environment of Arran. One such project is the footpaths on the island which lead to Loch na Davie – the pure water source which is an essential ingredient in the Arran Single Malt.
7,800 bottles will be available worldwide, hosting a Scotch that’s been bottled at cask strength (53.5%) without chill-filtration. Tasting notes from Isle of Arran describe the spirit as having “a zesty nose with an edge of spice” as well as flavors of “orchard fruits and baked apples, which are complimented by a sprinkling of vanilla and cinnamon.”
The packaging, meanwhile, features the God of beginnings, endings and transitions from the ancient Roman myth Janus. This God, depicted with two faces, was able to look back into the past and ahead into the future and prompts drinkers to reflect as well as enjoy the spirit.
