Highland Park Revamps Its Travel Retail Scotch Whisky Line Up

The popular distillery Highland Park out of Scotland last year began a revamping of its greater product line. This included a re-imagining of its bottle and label designs, and added references to the Nordic island culture it heralds from. This has now extended to its travel retail collection with the introduction of four bottles in a new series that draws inspiration from animals that have hero symbolic status for the Vikings.

Here’s more information on each new release from Highland Park:

  • Spirit of the Bear:  Providing an entry point into the new range, the smoky and bold Spirit of the Bear pays homage to a creature admired for its resilience and independence. Its intense aromatic smokiness is produced by Highland Park’s unique, woodless Orkney peat, hand-cut from Hobbister Moor, only seven miles from the distillery. A bright, natural golden straw colour, Spirit of The Bear is primarily matured in sherry-seasoned American Oak casks and bottled at 40% ABV. (Tasting Notes: Smoky peat | Root ginger | Freshly grated nutmeg | Sweet vanilla pods| 100% Natural Colour)
  • Loyalty of the Wolf:  The second expression in the series, 14 Year Old Loyalty Of The Wolf is a sweet and complex whisky. It displays a fine balance of contrasting flavours and reflects the character of the wolf, with which the Vikings felt tremendous affinity. This naturally light, burnished gold whisky is matured in a combination of sherry-seasoned American oak casks and ex-Bourbon casks and bottled at 42.3% ABV. (Tasting Notes: Vanilla sponge cake | Baked apples | Cinnamon | Light smoky peat | 100% Natural Colour)
  • Wings of the Eagle: A central figure in Viking legends, so the Eagle sits at the heart of the new range; 16 Year Old Wings Of The Eagle is a spicy and elegant whiskey, with layers of flavour derived from its combination of whiskeys matured in both sherry-seasoned European and American oak casks. 16 Year Old Wings Of The Eagle is a natural glowing amber colour, and bottled at 44.5% ABV. (Tasting Notes: Sweet figs and apricots | Warm nutmeg | Chocolate coated marzipan | Aromatic peat smoke | 100% Natural Color)
  • Viking Pride: The pinnacle of the collection, 18 Year Old Viking Pride Travel Edition offers the opportunity to try the award-winning domestic 18 years old at its marrying strength of 46% ABV, which delivers a naturally darker whiskey with a fuller flavour. It is matured primarily in sherry-seasoned European oak casks. (Tasting Notes: Cherry conserve | Rich, dark chocolate | Heather honey | Aromatic peat smoke | 100% Natural Color)

“The new travel retail exclusive Highland Park collection marks a major step for the brand as we look to deliver new innovations and explore new flavour profiles for whisky drinkers around the world,” said Jason Craig, Brand Director, Highland Park, in a prepared statement. “In a channel where storytelling and consumer engagement are critical, we’re confident that these whiskies capture the richness of our heritage and combine it with stunning, unique whiskies in beautiful packaging.”

As it stands now, plans call for the first three expressions listed above to already be hitting European travel retail, followed by the 18-year-old later this summer. The collection as a whole will then spread across the rest of the global travel retail market by year’s end.
