Grant's Ale Cask Finish Blended Whisky Comes To Market

Grant’s Ale Cask Finish Blended WhiskyScottish whisky company William Grant & Sons is known for many high end single malt brands, including Glenfiddich and The Balvenie. At the other end of its portfolio it also owns the world’s third largest blended Scotch label, Grant’s. It is under this latter umbrella it is introducing to American drinkers a new whisky that’s been finished in ex-ale barrels.

The new Grant’s Ale Cask Finish Blended Whisky is a non-age statement expression which is finished for up to four months in barrels with previously held an undisclosed ale. Grant’s Master Blender Brian Kinsman teamed up with a small, unnamed Scottish brewing company to make use of their ale casks for the creation of this whisky. The resulting bottling was given “a distinctively creamy, malty and honeyed taste” after the maturation.

“I thoroughly enjoy working with different finishes on our blended whiskies – it’s a fascinating process to monitor the evolution as the casks work their magic on the liquid,” said Kinsman in a statement. “We have the end result in mind as we craft all our whiskies, but there is something special about adding the final touch with an interesting finish. The resulting flavor of the whisky is so reminiscent of the liquid previously held in the cask, it takes the drinker’s palate on a really remarkable journey.”

Official tasting notes for what’s said to be “the first ever ale cask finish whisky” are below from Grant’s. Should you want to track down a bottle of this Scotch, expect to pay around $20 for the 40% ABV offering.

Nose: Clean and fresh, with creamy maltiness. Subtle elderflower and heather.
