Chapter One honors Cochrane Cartwright, “the legendary distillery manager who transformed the distillery in 1869 by slowing the stills, making them the slowest in Scotland, and introducing sherry cask maturation to Glengoyne,” according to the press release. “These changes brought a remarkable amplification of the sweet, fruity characteristics for which Glengoyne is now renowned.”

True to that history, this expression was aged partially in first-fill European oak oloroso casks, along with Glengoyne’s own “prized refill casks.” The distillery writes that these barrels “allow the iconic sweet, fruity house style of Glengoyne Distillery, as established by Cartwright, to shine through.” The no-age-statement expression is bottled at 48% ABV.
Glengoyne Legacy Series Chapter One is available on shelves for a price point of around £55, or about $70 USD. Official tasting notes from the distillery are as follows:
- Color: Amber
- Nose: Full and rich, sticky toffee pudding with dates and vanilla custard, warm pear and cinnamon
- Palate: Mouth coating and thick; layers of sweet, fruity sherry notes over gentle oak with sultanas and vanilla
- Finish: Dried fruits and spice linger in a long, balanced finish
