Glenglassaugh Distillery Digs In Archives For New Single Cask Malts

The Glenglassaugh Distillery just outside of the Speyside region of Scotland is one of those which shuttered for a time during a weaker whisky industry some time back. It has come to life again though, digging through old casks for releases such as a 30 year old from last year and now a series of single cask bottlings stretching back to the late 1960s.

Eight single malt expressions make up this first batch of limited edition expressions from the distillery. Ranging from 45 to 28 years in age, all are presented in a golden box and said to be crisp, fresh and sweet Highland spirits that hit the palate with a range of fruit flavors.

Glenglassaugh said “the oldest, cask # 1601, 45 years old, was distilled in May 1968. Bottled at 44.3% vol, this autumn gold veteran is long and luxurious. On the nose, heady red candy apples balance with delicate spiced orange softening to distant pineapple juice. And on the palate, crisp oak spices soften to reveal elegant waves of fresh green apple and wisps of ripe banana. Delicate hints of passion fruit, cedar wood and lime zest bring a fantastic depth to the long finish.”

In contrast to this is cask # 2101, which was bottled at 43.7% vol after being distilled in February 1986. It is said, on the nose, to have “gentle heather honey [that] holds warm cigar box spices. Crisp, freshly-ground barley surrounds soaked raisins and sultanas. And on the palate, a toasted white oak spice runs through Demerara caramelised orchard fruits which mellow to dried apricot and hints of vanilla in the long subtle finish. ”
