Glendronach Launches (Again) Glendronach 14 Year Virgin Oak Wood Finish

Glendronach 14 Year Virgin Oak Wood FinishBack in 2010, Glendronach introduced four new wood finished Scotch whiskies to their line up, the first of their kind to ever be released by the distillery in its 180-year history. One of these was a virgin oak wood expression, which has just now been re-released as the new Glendronach 14 Year Old Virgin Oak Wood Finish.

The Glendronach 14 Year Old Virgin Oak Wood Finish, according to the distillery, was matured initially in European oak casks before being finished in a small amount of virgin oak casks. Now, if you know your cask aging, it is usually the case that Scotch is aged in ex-this or that barrels, typically ex-bourbon or ex-sherry.

Virgin oak, however, it is exactly that – a barrel that has never been used to age anything. In the case of this whisky, the distillery used American virgin oak casks. The practice of using these types of barrels, either for full maturation or finishing, is not without its share of careful considerations when being put into play.

This particular Glendronach was bottled at 46% ABV and is both non-chill filtered and of natural color. Official tasting notes for it are below from the distillery, and no official price has been announced as of yet.

Color: Light gold. Freshly harvest straw.

Nose: Toasted oak elements which are so intense that smoky attributes emerge. Sweet and lush tropical fruits rise with prominence. Banana and cacao, with roasted coconut.

Palate: Spiced ginger and cinnamon cake with a beautiful smoky twist. Creamed desiccated coconut and fresh buttered toast with a handful of hazelnuts on the side.

Conclusion: A glorious nut feast with superb depth.
