Compass Box Surfaces New Scotch as a Recognition of Women in Whisky

Diageo’s recent unveiling of the Jane Walker variant of Johnnie Walker has been met with mixed feelings, with some seeing it as a marketing ploy while others see it as a genuine nod in acknowledgement of women’s roles in whisky. Whatever the case, independent Scotch whisky bottler Compass Box looks to have waded into these waters as well with the recent unveiling a blended grain whisky known as Hedonism, The Muse.

Hedonism, The Muse, according to Compass Box, is was created to celebrate the role women have in this company, in part, as they now make up the majority of the company’s employees. The label of the bottle features a woman on it, and the bottling as a whole falls into the bottler’s Hedonism brand.

As for what is in the bottle specifically, it is said it started with a cask of exceptionally aged single grain whisky of unknown origin that supposedly was recently discovered. This was then blended with other single grains of varying ages to get the final expression. More specifically, the mix is as follows:

  • Grain whisky, Invergordon, refill American standard barrel (27.2% total liquid volume)
  • Grain whisky, North British, re-charred barrel (20.4% total liquid volume)
  • Grain whisky, Strathclyde, refill hogshead (16% total liquid volume)
  • Grain whisky, North British, first fill bourbon barrel (15.7% total liquid volume)
  • Grain whisky blend, Unknown, butt (13.8% total liquid volume)
  • Grain whisky, Port Dundas, re-charred barrel (3.6% total liquid volume)
  • Grain whisky, Port Dundas, hogshead (3.3% total liquid volume)

As it stands right now plans call for around 3,060 bottles to be made available worldwide. The whisky is bottled at 53.3% ABV and is both non-chill filtered and of natural color. You’ll find official limited tasting notes below for your consideration.

Aromas and flavours reminiscent of vanilla, marzipan and honey. Full on the palate, round and with a very sweet impression. Very long finish that echoes the vanilla and marzipan.

Cask Fraud Addressed in Scottish Parliament

The potential impacts of cask investment fraud on the scotch whisky industry was discussed in the Scottish Parliament in April 2024, hopefully paving the way for more regulation within the industry.
