Bladnoch Distillery Releases A 30 Year Old Scotch

The Lowlands-region Scotch distillery known as Bladnoch has a rich history, first established in 1817 and today overseen by master distiller Dr. Nick Savage, formerly at The Macallan. It has recently released its oldest expression since changing ownership hands some years back, a 30 year old bottling.

The new Bladnoch 30 Year Old, according to those behind it, was matured in a combination of just two Oloroso and Moscatel Sherry casks. It is a small batch release, numbering just 950 bottles.

“Our 30yo was designed to showcase the pinnacle of our range with the unique combination of Oloroso and Moscatel casks,” said Savage in a prepared statement. “This unique cask combination, rarity, and character, will inspire our future whisky making for many years.”

“It is an immense privilege to release this 30-year-old Single Malt, produced from Bladnoch’s heritage whisky and matured in these stunning rare casks,” added Bladnoch owner and Australian businessman David Prior. “This continues an exciting chapter in Bladnoch’s rich whisky making history as we continue to develop our portfolio.”

The whisky is bottled at 45.5% ABV, without chill filtration and with natural color. Priced at £1,000, it will be sold around the world through Bladnoch’s network of distributors in the coming months.

Bladnoch, noted as being the oldest privately owned Scotch whisky distillery in the world, is also the southernmost distillery in Scotland. It is commonly referred to as the “Queen of the Lowlands.”

Official tasting notes for the Bladnoch 30 Year are below.

  • Nose: Dried apricots, floral and nutmeg, with Seville oranges
  • Palate: Almonds and marzipan with Seville oranges
  • Finish: Light, floral and fruit with a crack of black pepper

Cask Fraud Addressed in Scottish Parliament

The potential impacts of cask investment fraud on the scotch whisky industry was discussed in the Scottish Parliament in April 2024, hopefully paving the way for more regulation within the industry.
