Art Focused Macallan Scotch Release Pays Homage To Master Photographer Mario Testino

The Macallan distillery, among all of its very fancy Scotch expressions, is particularly noted for its popular Masters of Photography series, which pairs a unique single malt with artwork tied to a well known photographer. A release earlier this year put together a Japanese photographer with a dark single cask Macallan expression, and now the latest offering ties six single cask choices to one Mario Testino.

The Masters of Photography: Mario Testino Edition, according to The Macallan, pays homage to a photographer who is known for transforming

reality into the more vivid and desirable [that] has resulted in some of the most prolific and recognisable photographs of our time, including the iconic portrait of Diana, Princess of Wales for her Vanity Fair cover story in 1997, and intimate shots of original supermodel Kate Moss spanning several decades.

In this new whisky offering, limited to just 1,000 boxes, one gets seven bottles all total for the price of £2215 ($3,470). These bottles are drawn from six unique casks from the over 200,000 maturing at the distillery. One larger bottle represents the single malt made from marrying the casks together, while six smaller bottles tucked into an obscure hidden compartment in each box have whiskies from each individual cask in them.

Beyond the whisky itself, the other contents of this release are pretty slick. The distillery collaborated on this with Testino, resulting in four different variant boxes that each feature an “iconic” shot taken by him. The high gloss, black lacquered cases are individually numbered and include “an exclusive photo-archival booklet” featuring a total of 20 images taken by the photographer.

Whisky Review: The Bruichladdich Thirty

We review The Bruichladdich Thirty, a Scotch single malt aged for three decades in ex-bourbon casks laid down around the time the distillery shuttered for seven years starting in 1994.
