Michter’s celebrates the 10th anniversary of a very special expression in 2024. In celebration of this milestone, the brand is re-releasing its US*1 Toasted Barrel Finish Bourbon with a suggested RRP of $110. The bourbon represented the creation of the ‘toasted barrel finish category’ upon its initial release in 2014.
The US*1 Toasted Barrel Finish Bourbon undergoes an 18-month finishing period in a barrel made of air-dried wood, and toasted (not charred) to exact specifications. The bourbon is then bottled at 91.4 proof.
A Groundbreaking Product
Speaking about the impact of the initial release Michter’s President, Joseph J. Magliocco, said: “Ten years ago, after a good deal of research and experimentation, we released the first toasted barrel whiskey: Michter’s US*1 Toasted Barrel Finish Bourbon. We had no idea it would be such a groundbreaking product.”
Andrea Wilson, Master of Maturation, gave bourbon fans a clue as to what they can expect from the Toasted Barrel Finish, saying: “It’s a testament to our team that so many other great distillers have followed us in releasing toasted barrel finish whiskeys. There are many different toast profiles in which the barrel is heated to create beautiful flavor notes. This year’s Michter’s US*1 Toasted Barrel Finish Bourbon reminds me of a fall evening where we are roasting campfire treats with graham crackers, marshmallows, caramel and butterscotch.”
Finally, Master Distiller Dan McKee added: “On the tenth anniversary of Michter’s creation of the toasted barrel finish category, our team could not be more excited to share this latest release of Michter’s US*1 Toasted Barrel Finish Bourbon with our loyal Michter’s fans. There was a consensus among our tasting panel members that this 2024 release furthers the legacy of Michter’s exceptional toasted whiskeys.”
About Michter’s
Michter’s is one of America’s oldest whiskey brands, with roots dating back to 1753. Originally founded in Pennsylvania under the name Shenk’s, it was established by Swiss Mennonite farmer John Shenk, who produced rye whiskey. The brand later became known as Bomberger’s, named after a subsequent owner.
The name “Michter’s” was introduced in the 20th century by distiller Lou Forman, combining the names of his sons, Michael and Peter. The distillery faced challenges during the Prohibition era and went bankrupt in 1989. However, the Michter’s brand was revived in the 1990s by Joseph J. Magliocco and Richard “Dick” Newman, who relocated operations to Kentucky, the heart of American whiskey.
