Whiskey Review: Egan’s Fortitude Single Malt Irish

Tasting Notes:

About:
Appearance:
A pale yellow, similar to an early spring straw. In the glass, there was a light viscosity with lots of lots of legs.
Nose:
A good amount of barnyard initially, and then the fruit elements show up to the party. Kicking it in the background are elements of honey and fall fruit.
Palate:
It took a while to properly get to know this one. The main notes are of smoked green tea, honeydew, milk chocolate, and a kiss of smoke. In addition, for such a light bodied whiskey, the finish is long-lasting and incorporates a touch of pine nut.
Finish:
Comments:
The element of the milk chocolate brings a fun element to the table. It had a high enough proof to keep things bold and interesting. Also, as the weather turns chillier, the bit of smoke is also a welcome addition. This may not be one to buy outright, but it’s definitely worthy of a pour at a local bar or restaurant to decide for yourself.

The Egan family is said to have a long legacy of whiskey making that starts in 1852 in Tullamore, a county town located in in the Midlands Region of Ireland. P.&H. Egan, LTD, became one of the country’s larger merchant houses, bonders, and bottles for 116 years. The brand was reimagined in 2013 by the fifth and sixth generation Maurice and Jonathan Egan.

“His stalwart character and fierce resolve made him a passionate Irishman and formidable businessman, leading the Egan name to become one of the most recognized whiskey brands in Ireland,” said Jonathan Egan, part of the sixth generation of the Egan family, in a prepared statement. “With the marriage of sherry and single malt Irish whiskey, Fortitude is a nod to that time in our heritage when Henry sought to bring the best of Ireland to the world, and best of the world to back home to Ireland.”

The Fortitude by the Egan’s team is an Irish whiskey fully aged in Pedro Ximenez sherry casks. There is no age statement. The question is of balance, as sherry wine finishes can be be hit or miss. Having researched Irish whiskey for this review, I’ve noticed more sherry influences over the years. So I was really curious about this one. At first glance, the color was a bit on the lighter side, once again adding to the question of aging. The family whiskey story always tends to get to me. I believe it is a nod to what we drink and when we drink it. There’s usually a story to tell, either from the perspective of the distillery or the one drinking it. The experience is special in that respect. It could be the passing of a person dear to you, a celebration, or just a desire for whiskey.
