Newest Writers’ Tears Irish Single Malt Aged In Spanish Oloroso Sherry Casks

Walsh Whiskey recently announced the stateside launch of its limited Writers’ Tears ‘Red Head’ Single Malt Irish Whiskey.

The new expression joins the Writers’ Tears portfolio, which includes Copper Pot, Double Oak, and annual cask strength whiskeys, which arrived in the U.S. starting in 2016.

Writers’ Tears ‘Red Head’ Single Malt is matured in Spanish Oloroso Sherry casks, which the distiller notes give the new expression a rich, ruby hue. That’s where they got the whiskey’s ‘Red Head’ name.

A statement from Walsh Whiskey notes that the single malt is non-chill filtered and clocks in at 46% ABV. The tasting notes show that on the nose, the whiskey has aromas of orange peel, dried fruits, and sherry plums. It tastes of nutty Oloroso, spicy raisins, and creamy oak and finishes long with a flourish of orange.

“We are delighted to finally debut Writers’ Tears ‘Red Head’ in the United States, especially for fans of our other core expressions in the Writers’ Tears range, who have long looked forward to experiencing this distinct whiskey,” said Bernard Walsh, creator of Writers’ Tears. “We are very proud of the marriage between this single malt expression and the precious, hand selected Oloroso Sherry casks.”

Imported to the U.S. by Hotaling & Co. of San Francisco, Writers’ Tears ‘Red Head’ Single Malt Whiskey has a suggested retail price of $69.99 and can be found in 22 states.

Walsh Whiskey was established in 1999, and has been a part of the Amber Beverage Group since 2021. They are makers of The Irishman and Writers’ Tears Irish whiskey which total 23 expressions based on historic recipes from the 19th century. The company is based in Carlow, Southwest of Dublin, Ireland.
