Crown Royal Cornerstone Blend A New Canadian Limited Whisky

Crown Royal Cornerstone BlendIn a whiskey world where interests drinkers have are ever being challenged by new experiments, the likes of venerable brands such as Crown Royal must stay flexible to being innovative themselves in order to remain relevant. The Canadian whisky label made one such huge splash last year via its Northern Harvest Rye bottling garnering a whisk(e)y of the year award from spirits writer Jim Murray, and now word has floated out of the new Noble Collection.

The Crown Royal Noble Collection is said to pay homage to the brand’s roots, originally being created as a gift to King Gregory VI when he came to visit Canada on the eve of World War II breaking out. The first expression to emerge from this line up is the Cornerstone blend, described as showcasing three Canadian whiskies: “a spicy Canadian Rye, a creamy coffey still whisky and a bourbon-style whisky matured in charred American white oak.”

Crown Royal Cornerstone Blend, set to price around $60, was bottled at 80.6 proof and will be made available across the country shortly in “limited” quantities. It will be followed yearly by another Noble Collection expression, each again likely in limited numbers.

Limited official tasting notes for Cornerstone are below for your consideration, as well as a little marketing video which, while short on information, is still worth a watch. It should be noted as well the whiskies for this blend, according to Distiller, were moved back and forth between Crown Royal facilities via train to essentially safeguard the bottling before its release.

A nose of cherry pie, baking spice and dry toasted oak shavings…and flavors of sweet red apples and oaky spice with a slight tartness for balance. The finish is a fade to gentle wood spice.
