Woodford Reserve Brings Forth Holiday, Bottled in Bond Bourbons

Kentucky’s Woodford Reserve distillery is rolling into the 2018 holiday season with a couple of new bottlings to let you know about. One is their regular signature whiskey all decked out in a special holiday bottle, while the other is a bottled in bond offering that will be for sale in Kentucky only.

The Woodford Reserve Bottled In Bond Distillery Series, according to those behind it, is part of the distillery’s Distillery Series, a line up of mostly one-off expressions that are limited edition in nature. This particular offering is said to follow the rules for bottled in bond, namely that it has been “produced by one distiller at the same distillery within one 6-month distillation ‘season.’ The product [also] must be aged for at least 4 years in a federally bonded warehouse at 100 proof.”

“Given the historical nature of our distillery — a National Historic Landmark — it is only appropriate that one of the oldest distilleries in the country releases an expression in the oldest federal designation for bourbon,” said Woodford Reserve Master Distiller Chris Morris in a prepared statement.

Plans call for the bourbon to price around $50 for a 375 ml bottle and to be available at the distillery and select Kentucky retailers. Official tasting notes for this honey topaz colored whiskey can be found below.

  • Aroma: A complex medley of tropical fruit, apple and grape brandy. Notes filling a nutty graham cracker crust drizzled with honey and toasted coconut sprinkles.
  • Taste: Tart green apple pie, with a graham cracker crust spiced with a dash of cinnamon. Poached pear and floral notes round out the palate.
  • Finish: A dry apple peel sweet sweetness lingers on.

Joining the Bottled in Bond bourbon is the distillery’s yearly holiday offering, taking the form of a decorated bottle that’s themed to a snowy distillery and prices around $50. Specifically, the 1-liter bottle’s artwork, titled “Winter Spirit,” was created by painter Lynn Dunbar of Louisville, Kentucky. It features snow-covered bourbon barrels and the Scale House Woodford Reserve Distillery, a National Historic Landmark where bourbon distilling first occurred in 1812. The Scale House is one of several historic properties on the distillery grounds in Woodford County, Kentucky.”
