SpiritStation the Self-Service Whiskey Machine of your Dreams

Imagine this – you are at a bar and you want to compare some whiskies side-by-side. The problem is, the bartender isn’t the most attentive in the world, leaving you wondering if you’ll ever actually get that flight you ordered 15 minutes ago. One possible solution? Self-service technology in the form of the new SpiritStation.

The SpiritStation, which we learned about from Whisky Advocate, follows in the model of self-dispensing wine machines which are becoming more common in wine bars around the country. Napa Technology, developer of the WineStation, first introduced this type of dispensing technology over a decade ago. It isn’t something we’ve really seen in the spirits space, however, but with the rapid rise in interest in all things whiskey, it might be the right time for a machine like this one

Napa Technology said they’ve been test marketing SpiritStation, which allows for preservation and dispensing of spirits and batch cocktails, at the Atlanta Stillhouse in the Hartsfield-Jackson Airport in Atlanta, Georgia. This program has been focused on American whiskies,

offering 32 different bourbons. Included in this pilot program was the SpiritStation’s ability to allow guests a self-service experience and enjoy flights of bourbon ranging from Jim Beam to ultra-premium brands like Booker’s and Basil Hayden’s.

“We have seen a trend in whiskey and bourbons that is mirroring the explosion of wines by the glass, on restaurant menus across the country,” said Jayne Portnoy, vice president of marketing & brand development for Napa Technology, in a statement. “The SpiritStation allows for restaurants and bars to easily offer their guests a true tasting experience, once reserved only for wine, with the convenience of preservation, appropriate temperatures and consistent pour sizes.”

Technical aspects of this machine include temperature control and automated and programmable pouring options, among other features. Perhaps the only thing the device doesn’t do is check IDs before dispensing, but provided that bartender is paying at least enough attention to do that, bars and restaurants shouldn’t run into issues of minors turning a SpiritStation into a party machine.
