Rare 36-Year-Old Redemption Bourbon Sells For $18K At Auction

One of the oldest bourbons in America went up for auction recently, and after the hammer fell, it sold for $18,000.

At the most recent Sotheby’s auction, dubbed “The Camouflage Collection Part 1,” one of only 18 Redemption 36-Year-Old bourbons was among the stars of that luxury whiskey auction.

A statement from the makers of Redemption noted that this represents the first time Redemption Whiskey has been included in the luxury auction.

The focus of the sale was on American whiskey, with highlights coming from a variety of distilleries and other brands, including Pappy Van Winkle, Willett, Michter’s, Double Eagle Very Rare and the Buffalo Trace Antique Collection.

The auction description for the 36-year-old Redemption bourbon explained that the $18,000 bid and subsequent purchases brought the new owner “one of the most exclusive whiskey experiences in the world.”

“Its numerous pleasures and delights begin with its coin-embedded wood stopper, where you’ll find a penny from 1978 … the year it was distilled. It is, indeed, a lucky penny for those who take ownership of it. There are only 18 of them, and they sit atop one of the oldest bourbons ever available in America,” the Sotheby’s listing stated.

“From beginning to end, this elder statesman is a pure revelation for true bourbon lovers. It begins with aromas of leather, grilled meat, cherry wood and cigar boxes. On the palate, you’ll find dried orange and cinnamon mingling with sweet smoke. It cascades into a medium-length finish with lingering notes of cherry wood and citrus and most prominently, a lasting memory of how unique bourbon can be.”
