New Black-Owned Bourbon Brand In Tennessee Launches In Nashville

Editor’s Note: An editorial review of this story post publication, per the request of Uncle Nearest, has indicated Reverence may not be the “first” in regards to how it is referenced. We regret the error in this reporting, and until the issue is resolved between the two brands, we’ve opted to slide the wording in this article into a more neutral consideration (i.e. one of the first).

New to Nashville, deep in the heart of Tennessee whiskey country, is a new spirit called Reverence Bourbon. And it’s the one of the first black-owned bourbon brands in the state.

The new spirits startup launched the first of March, and the man putting a spin on Tennessee’s rich whiskey history is local firefighter and Tennessee State University grad, Michael Frazier.

“Reverence means deep respect for someone or something,” said Frazier in a prepared statement. “This bourbon was made for first responders. Reverence is dedicated to giving back to that community, which safeguards our families and our community. We should honor those who protect us in our moments of need.”

Frazier explained that he gets his drive to give back to the community from his mother, who served in the military and was deployed after 9/11. Today, Frazier serves as a firefighter with the Nashville Fire Department and is the co-founder of Hydrate the Hood, a local nonprofit.

Reverence Bourbon is curated from two different aged barrels, with every batch of the locally-made bourbon aged in brand new charred oak barrels, with a precise corn to rye ratio and a touch of barley that delivers what’s described as a premium oak flavor.

The distiller’s notes show the bourbon has tasting notes of caramel, maple, and kettle corn as well as chocolate, malt, and oak. The finish is smooth with a hint of fresh-cut spearmint.

And as Reverence was launching the new bourbon, the brand also announced the launch of a companion, handmade cigar crafted with Nicaraguan tobacco and a Sumatra wrapper, each imbued with Reverence Bourbon.

Right now, Reverence Bourbon and cigars will be delivered directly to consumers via online sales, and it’s available at local retailers, as well as bars, restaurants, country clubs, private clubs, and nightclubs in Nashville and Memphis. It will soon be available to ship to 46 states.

Cask Fraud Addressed in Scottish Parliament

The potential impacts of cask investment fraud on the scotch whisky industry was discussed in the Scottish Parliament in April 2024, hopefully paving the way for more regulation within the industry.
