Garrison Brothers recently released Guadalupe 2023, its Texas straight bourbon whiskey finished in port casks and named after the Lone Star State’s famous river.
A statement from the Texas distiller notes that this limited release includes 16,098 bottles for this year. This expression, which clocks in at 107 proof, is one of Garrison Brothers’ most awarded whiskeys.
In 2022, Guadalupe won Double Gold, Best of Class and Best Straight Bourbon at the 2022 Craft Distillers Competition; Gold at the 2022 International Spirits Competition; Platinum at the 2022 Las Vegas Global Spirits Awards; and Double Gold at the 2022 New York International Spirits Competition.
Guadalupe is made from grain to glass at the distillery in Hye, Texas, by Master Distiller Donnis Todd and his team.
The distiller’s notes describe Guadalupe as a dessert bourbon, and the whiskey makers pair the spirit with chocolate or a decadent treat. The tasting notes describe flavors of berry fruit, ripe plums, strawberry butter on flaky biscuits, chocolate and cinnamon, as well as lavender honey.
“This round of ports exceeded all expectations I had,” said Master Distiller Donnis Todd. “Guadalupe 2023 will easily replace chocolates for your valentine, you’re welcome.”
Working directly with winemakers across Portugal, Todd said he was able to find the exact flavor characteristics he was seeking for a perfect port cask finished bourbon. It was after trial and error that he found the perfect maturation combination to be four years in white American oak casks followed by two years in tawny port casks.
It was back in 2015 when Garrison Brothers teamed up with Texas winemakers Llano Estacado using the winery’s decades-old port casks to craft Garrison Brothers’ 2019 limited Texas straight bourbon whiskey release Estacado.

Todd said it was then he began to source exclusive port casks from Portugal.
