Frank August Bourbon Debuts In Minimalist Bottle Design

The new Frank August Small Batch Kentucky Straight Bourbon Whiskey debuted recently in a minimalist bottle design, custom made to, as the brand puts it, reflect its “philosophy of modernity and belief that less is more.”

The bourbon, with each batch being blended with no more than 10-15 barrels, comes in a container that’s described as being “intentionally crafted to function as a beautiful decanter, with a heavy-weight brass closure, discrete precious metal gold decoration and a clear back label which peels away effortlessly, leaving zero residue.”

Frank August, sourced from an unnamed Kentucky distiller, is bottled at 100 proof and prices for around $70. It is being distributed in the following markets: CA, AZ, WA, NV, KY, D.C., FL (available now) and NY (available August 2022).

In addition to their flagship Small Batch Kentucky Straight Bourbon Whiskey, they will be introducing two new expressions in October 2022: a Single Barrel product, as well as a ‘Case Study’ program where they will be experimenting with various finishing techniques. Frank August’s first release of ‘Case Study’ will be with Mizunara (Japanese Oak).

“We’re humbled and excited to have the opportunity to contribute to the rich history of bourbon, through telling the story of Frank August,” said CEO and Co-Founder, Johnathan Crocker, in a prepared statement. “Can bourbon be more than what we’ve confined it to be? Can its identity of America’s Spirit be more than that of just legacy? We believe so and look forward to telling that story.”

Official tasting notes for this release are below.

  • APPEARANCE: A rich auburn with full legs that beautifully coats the glass.
  • NOSE: Frank August’s Small Batch Kentucky Straight Bourbon opens with hints of caramel and vanilla that are balanced with warm oak and mild baking spices which warm the senses.
  • PALATE: Echoes those initial sweet caramel and vanilla notes on the front of your tongue, with cinnamon and rye bread spices coming forward, as it gradually transitions to the back of your tongue. At 100 proof, it is a perfect balance of heat and smoothness that warms your mouth, while hints of brown and malt sugars begin to present themselves.
  • FINISH: As flavors of vanilla, oak and baking spices transition through all senses, it leaves a medium – long finish, wanting you to pour another glass.

We review The Bruichladdich Thirty, a Scotch single malt aged for three decades in ex-bourbon casks laid down around the time the distillery shuttered for seven years starting in 1994.
