Blood Oath Pact No. 5 Gets Rum Cask Finishing This Time Around

The Blood Oath ultra-premium bourbon series from Luxco has hit something of a milestone for itself in that it is now on its fifth iteration. It remains a pretty popular sourced whiskey blending experiment put forth annually by Lux Row Distillers’ Head Distiller and Master Blender John Rempe, who this time around has a bit of rum cask finishing going on with it to add “a touch of warm island spice.”

Blood Oath Pact No. 5, according to those behind it, starts with an eight year old, high rye sourced bourbon that’s been finished for half a year in ex-dark Caribbean rum barrels. It is then combined with an 11 year old, high wheat bourbon and a 13 year old, high rye bourbon for the final blend. The result is said to be “a well-balanced, spicy, sweet, lingering bourbon with complex flavor notes.”

“When selecting these bourbons,” said Rempe in a prepared statement, “I knew the dark rum sweet notes would be a perfect complement for these well-aged bourbons, and the result is extremely satisfying. On the nose, Pact No. 5 comes right off with dark fruit notes, brown sugar and a touch of orange zest, followed by sugar cane and dark chocolate notes and a little heat once you sip it. This one offers a lingering finish, accented by notes of honey.”

As with previous Blood Oath releases, Pact No. 5 will both be limited in scope and more expensive in price. Plans call for only 15,000 cases (3 packs) to be released, bottled at 98.6 proof and pricing around $100 per 750 ml bottle.  Each bottle is topped with a custom, natural cork and sealed and hand-labeled with certificate-style paper stock. It comes housed in a “fire-branded wooden display box.”
