Black Button Distilling Debuts A Bespoke Bourbon Blending Program

New York-based Black Button Distilling, a grain-to-glass distillery based in Rochester, New York, is taking customization to the next level.

They recently announced the launch of their custom bourbon blending program, which can be utilized amongst hospitality partners and retailers to create a unique and exclusive bourbon based on consumer’s preferences.

As the first grain-to-glass distillery to launch a custom bourbon blend program, Black Button Distilling is seemingly looking to push innovation in their sector of the bourbon industry.

The new program starts with personalized consultations: the Black Button team meets with restaurant owners, bartenders and liquor store operators to get to know their customer base.

Next, they receive a flavor profile survey to determine additional preferences and hone in on flavors such as sweet, spice or oak. Each blend is made with a base of Black Button Distilling’s Straight Bourbon Whiskey, available in 90, 92 or 94 proof, and fitted with a customized hangtag noting the specific establishment.

As a New York State Farm Distillery, Black Button Distilling’s bourbon is locally sourced, and crafted from 60% corn, 20% wheat, 11% malted barley, and 9% rye. There’s a minimum purchase of 100 bottles for this program.

“Increasingly, we are noticing that customers are interested in personalization,” said Jason Barrett, president and master distiller at Black Button, in a prepared statement. “Consumers want things that are one-of-a-kind or limited edition. With the launch of a custom bourbon blending program, we can give retailers a leg up on the competition with something that is uniquely theirs, making them a special destination to purchase bespoke blends.”

Black Button Distilling tested the program with select partners earlier this year, and found quick praise among the initial bourbon club members and liquor store owners.

Founded by Barrett in 2012, at only 24 years old, Black Button Distilling is Rochester’s first grain-to-glass craft distillery to open since prohibition. Black Button Distilling said it isi committed to local and small batch, with more than 90 percent of its ingredients grown in New York State.

In 2018, Black Button opened their own farm and forestry, where they grow juniper for gin, white oak to make their own bourbon barrels and fresh herbs and spices as well as organic honey for their cocktails.

In 2020, Black Button expanded their national footprint by offering their spirits for purchase online.
