Bardstown Bourbon, Château de Laubade Team Up Once Again

Bardstown Bourbon’s partnership with French Armagnac house Château de Laubade has lead to another expression of the Collaborative Series, set to release on September 9th.

The 2022 Château de Laubade Armagnac release includes a blend of Kentucky bourbon aged 12 years, and Tennessee bourbon aged 10 years. It’s finished in Laubade Armagnac casks for another 16 months.

The finishing casks themselves aged from 16 to 24 months in different warehouse locations, which brought a contrast of wood extraction

A statement from Bardstown explains that this custom bourbon blend helps accentuate the nuanced flavors from each barrel.

The initial collaboration, released in April of 2020, was named Best in Class, Double Gold in the Finished Bourbons category at the 2021 San Francisco Wine & Spirits Competition.

“It was important to us that this release be distinct from the original, while still bringing some of the same unique characteristics,” said Dan Callaway, VP of product development and hospitality for Bardstown. “The bold Kentucky bourbon really balances with oak that is bursting with the fiery Armagnac character. The Tennessee bourbon provides a hint of citrus, which highlights Laubade’s unique floral notes”

He said they’re always looking to push the boundaries of modern bourbon blending and the whiskey maker found that this release is evidence of a strong, creative partnership between Callaway and Château de Laubade.

Denis Lesgourgues, owner and general director of Famille Lesgourgues, said, “Just as we are inventing the Armagnac of tomorrow thanks to our spirit of innovation, our fellows at Bardstown are designing the modern bourbon.”

The distiller’s notes on this expression find that on the nose, there are aromas of baked pear with nutmeg, cinnamon, and sage with hints of toffee, brown sugar, and almond. The palate follows with vanilla bean, oak, and golden raisin.

The Château de Laubade Armagnac Collaborative Series release clocks in at 107 proof (53.5% ABV) and has a suggested retail price of $159.99. About 2,700 cases of the finished bourbon will be available through the Bardstown Bourbon Co. gift shop, at retailers in 20 states, and online at Seelbachs.com.

The potential impacts of cask investment fraud on the scotch whisky industry was discussed in the Scottish Parliament in April 2024, hopefully paving the way for more regulation within the industry.
