Westland’s Latest Garryana American Single Malt Gets A PX Kiss

The now annual Garryana American single malt offering from Seattle, Washington-based Westland Distillery has, over the years, been an exploration of the impact of Pacific Northwest native oak on whiskey. It is something the distillery has tweaked a bit over time, subject to such things as availability of ready whiskey and the oak itself. For 2019 it is back yet again, this time bringing with it some ex-PX sherry cask back up.

The new Westland Garryana 4|1, according to those behind it, includes some casks traditionally used in whiskey-making, such as first-fill ex-rye and bourbon casks, but the spotlight is said to be “squarely on the marriage of Garry oak and Pedro Ximenez Sherry casks.” To this end, Westland Master Distiller Matt Hofmann and Blender Shane Armstrong wanted to explore whether these two rich and assertive flavors could live together in a single whiskey.

“This year’s release continues our inquiry and plants yet another marker in unchartered territory that still seems to have no horizon,” said Hofmann in a prepared statement. “We sought to find out what happens when two of the deepest wells of flavor combine in one bottle.”

Nothing has been mentioned at this point about age times in any of these types of casks, or percentages of the total make up by cask type. The whiskey as a while is bottled at 50% ABV, with each of the 3,750 bottles being made available pricing at around $150. You’ll find some extremely limited official tasting notes below for your consideration.

  • Nose: Custard, blackberry syrup, dulce de leche, slightly savory
  • Palate: Dried blueberries, fudgesicle, fresh oak, grilled plum
