Virginia’s Catoctin Creek Readies Cask Strength Rye Whiskey

catoctin-caskVirginia’s Catoctin Creek distillery makes a name for itself in the whiskey world via its nearly two year old Roundstone Rye, which is organic, as well as a slightly higher proof offering of this same spirit. They aim to go even higher in the ABV department though, recently announcing a cask proof rye whiskey which very well could knock your socks off.

The aptly named Roundstone Rye Cask Proof, normally released only twice a year, clocks in a hefty 120 proof. This particular bottling, according to Catoctin Creek,

is two years old, batch number B15E2, and has a beautiful nose on it of rich caramel and wood spice, and is viscous and lovely in the mouth, with the characteristic sweet, smooth fruitiness that Roundstone Rye has become known for.

This whiskey will initially be available to members of the distillery’s fan club before being released to the general public on May 24 for around $90 per bottle. It will see limited distribution it looks like, mainly in Maryland, Delaware, Washington D.C., Virginia and New York. Only a couple hundred bottles are being put out into the world.
