Templeton Distillery Releases Stout Cask Finish Whiskey

Rye whiskey maker Templeton Distillery recently announced the launch of its 2022 Stout Cask Finish expression from their Barrel Finish Series.

This Imperial Stout Cask Finish is the fourth whiskey in Templeton’s Barrel Finish Series, which is sold on allocation.

A statement from Templeton explains that it was first introduced in 2019, and the Barrel Finish Series focuses on utilizing unusual wood treatments and sourcing unconventional flavors to elevate each of their expressions.

This year’s release concentrates on the flavor profile of coffee and chocolate. First it matured for six years in American oak flame-charred barrels, then the Stout Cask Finish was finished in bourbon barrel-aged chocolate coffee stout casks for three months.

The finished product clocks in at 46% ABV and is available in the U.S. and Europe for a suggested retail price of $54.99 per 750ml bottle.

The distiller’s notes show that this whiskey has aromas of roasted chocolate, cocoa, and dried apricot. The palate features flavors of sweet malt and roasted barley with black cherries and toasted almonds. The subtle coffee tones marry with a base of rye pepper and spice. It finishes with a creamy mouthfeel of roasted coffee and cocoa that dissipates in a long finish.

Templeton Distillery, of Templeton, Iowa, is known for its rye whiskey and its longtime mash bill of 95% rye and 5% malted barley.

Previous expressions from the Templeton Rye Barrel Cask Finish Series include the Oloroso Sherry Cask Finish (2021), the Caribbean Rum Cask Finish (2020), and the Maple Cask Finish Series (2019).

“This year, our Stout Cask Finish expression provides a fresh perspective and has proven disruptive within our Barrel Finish Series, mixing subtle coffee tones with rye pepper and spice,” said Blair Woodall, senior VP and general manager of Templeton Distillery. “This new-to-market release is sure to elevate any classic cocktail.”
