Stranahan’s Introduces NY Rye Cask As A Distillery Exclusive

Stranahan’s Colorado Whiskey recently introduced its NY Rye Cask, an American single malt made from a blend of five to nine-year-old whiskey, with a minimum of two years spent in New York rye casks from Black Dirt Distillery in Warwick, New York.

The NY Rye Cask is the latest in Stranahan’s limited-edition series of Distillery Exclusives.

In this series, the whiskey maker uses finishing techniques that are unique to their distillery.

A statement from Stranahan’s distillers note that like all Stranahan’s expressions, the NY Rye Cask is distilled from 100% malted barley and handmade in small batches at their Colorado facility using pure Rocky Mountain spring water from Eldorado Springs. The whiskey is non-chill filtered.

The maturation process features a marriage of five to nine-year-old Stranahan’s Single Malt Whiskey, initially aged in virgin American oak barrels, each with a #3 char.

For further aging, the whiskey is transferred into NY Rye Casks, where the liquid is finished for a minimum of two years.

The distiller’s notes show the final product to be herbal and spicy, with sweet nuances from a buttered cinnamon toast undertone.

On the nose, there are notes of earthy timber, with a hint of pine and menthol. The taste is spicy sweet, herbal, and oak-forward. And the finish features oak tannins fading into nutmeg and sweet cream.

Stranahan’s NY Rye Cask is bottled at 90 proof, 45% ABV, and has a suggested retail price of $69.99 for a 750ml bottle. It’s only available at the whiskey maker’s Denver distillery.
