Santa Fe Spirits Showcases An Unsmoked Colkegan Single Malt

Santa Fe Spirits is known to American single malt lovers for its mesquite smoked Colkegan whiskey. The distillery has now recently released an unsmoked variant.

The new Colkegan Unsmoked, according to those behind it, was aged for around four years in what’s described as used bourbon and New American oak barrels. It is bottled at 92 proof.

“Over the years we’ve been asked if we’d ever considered creating an unsmoked version of Colkegan, so, several years ago we put up some barrels of an unsmoked Colkegan,” said Santa Fe Spirits founder Colin Keegan in a prepared statement.  “We wanted to release a whiskey that would complement our current line-up of American Single Malts, but also stand on its own.”

Recently released directly through the distillery in New Mexico, a little over 1,000 bottles of  Colkegan Unsmoked have been made available. Plans call for a more generalized release sometime next year. You’ll find official tasting notes below.

  • Nose: Warm, light sweetness of warm brown sugar, bubblegum, macadamia nuts and even cinnamon.
  • Taste: Toasted walnuts, wafer cookies, toast, dried pit fruit, light spice,
  • Finish: Lovely finish, lasting into notes of toasted oak, and butterscotch pudding.
  • Color: The color evokes the coming of fall in the aspens, a deep amber luster as they welcome in the cooler nights of our Sangre de Cristo Mountains.
