Maryland’s Sagamore Spirit Distillery recently announced a new limited release from its Reserve Series, an 8-Year-Old Rye Whiskey.
A statement from the distiller notes that this whiskey was nearly a decade in the making, testing the patience and skill of Sagamore’s team of whiskey makers.
This new expression was aged in new, charred American white oak barrels for eight years. The tasting notes show the spirit features aromas of dried cherries, clove, and smoked vanilla. The palate tastes of candied ginger, sweet orange, molasses, and nut brittle.
The Reserve Series 8-Year-Old clocks in at 111.4 proof.
“Our 8-Year-Old Rye Whiskey comes from some of the first liquid we put into barrels and set us on the path to where we are today,” said Brian Treacy, Sagamore Spirit’s co-founder and president, in the prepared statement.
“More time in a barrel doesn’t always translate to better whiskey, but this release shows what can come from careful, expert aging and thoughtful blending,” he added. “The patience and care our distilling team took with this release dating back over eight years ago set the blueprint for the whiskies that would follow.”
This is the first Sagamore Spirit expression available throughout their entire domestic distribution footprint.
The 8-Year-Old Rye actually had an earlier version, available at the distillery and in select markets in 2021, that earned a Gold Medal from the ASCOT Awards and a Double Gold from the San Francisco World Spirits Competition.

The past two years, the Sagamore Spirit distilling team focused on making a more widely available version that matched the original in quality and flavor profile.
The Sagamore Spirit Reserve Series also includes a Port Finish, Rum Cask Finish and Sherry Finish in previous releases.
Sagamore Spirit Reserve Series 8-Year-Old Rye Whiskey will be available starting in March, in 750ml bottles, with a suggested retail price of $79.
