André Hueston Mack, founder and winemaker of Maison Noir Wines, and Pinhook Bourbon’s master blender, Sean Josephs, recently teamed up to create a limited-edition bourbon.

And that collaboration’s success got the duo thinking, there may be something more to be had. They got back to it and the new Pinhook brand, Rye & Sons, was born.

A statement from Pinhook Bourbon recently shared the details of this new venture.

“I wanted to make a great rye that really over-delivers on flavor, but most importantly, I wanted to bring a personality to the category,” Mack said in the prepared statement. “Rye is about the human connection with friends, with family, with whoever you are sipping with.”

Mack explained that he was drawn to the complexity of rye and the flavors it can produce, which paralleled the art of turning grapes into playful, exciting expressions of wine.

“Bourbon is like cabernet; rich, round and vanilla. And rye is a little bit more like pinot noir. It’s brighter, it’s lighter and drinks well young,” he said.

The distiller’s notes on the 2022 rendition of Rye & Sons, the first release in the line, shows the whiskey has aromas of orange zest, cane syrup, clove and eucalyptus on the nose. The palate shows flavors of anise, roasted nectarine, salted caramel and cinnamon.

The new expression clocks in at 97.5 proof, 48.75% ABV.

“I want to let the rye speak for itself. And I think there’s a little way to be playful, which is very inviting in a world that seems intimidating,” Mack added.

He stated that Rye & Sons’ price point should stay accessible, creating a quality rye that doesn’t have a high barrier of entry. Rye & Sons is available at retail outlets, online at Seelbachs.com and at bars and restaurants around the country, and has a suggested retail price of $28.99.
