New Basil Hayden’s Dark Rye Whiskey Touched With Port

The Basil Hayden’s brand under Beam-Suntory sits as a nice mid-shelf whiskey sipper among this spirit giant’s various offerings. The lone bourbon under this line was joined by a limited edition rye whiskey earlier this year, and now word is of even further expansion with another rye that is fortified wine influenced.

The new Basil Hayden’s Dark Rye whiskey, according to those behind it, brings into one bottle an interesting mix of alcohol to create this expression. What you’ve got in this is Kentucky straight rye whiskey, with its characteristic spiciness, balanced with the soft, rounded presence of Canadian rye from the Alberta Distillery. These two ryes are then touched with California port to add both a hint of sweetness and a deep ruby color to the final blend.

Basil Hayden's Dark Rye

“Bringing Basil Hayden’s Dark Rye to life as the first-ever permanent addition to the Basil Hayden’s family is an exciting moment for the brand and our growing fan base,” said Rob Mason, Vice President of North American Whiskey at Beam Suntory, in a prepared statement. “Basil Hayden’s Dark Rye offers an unparalleled complexity and rich flavor, while staying true to the unique approachability and style that has made our bourbon a long-time favorite.”

Plans call for this 80 proof rye whiskey, priced around $40, to be available nationwide starting now. It is packaged in a deep red, hand-applied parchment bib and wrapped with the copper belt iconic to Basil Hayden’s. You’ll find limited official tasting notes below for your consideration.
