New Baltimore Spirits Epoch Rye Whiskey Has Toasted Barrel Finish

Baltimore Spirits Company recently announced a new variant of their flagship rye whiskey, called Toasted Barrel Finish Post Epoch Rye Whiskey.

2020 was a busy year for the Maryland-based distillery, previously known as the Baltimore Whiskey Company. The five-year-old venture released nine different special products alone, including four additions to their award-winning Post Epoch line of whiskeys, with one example being a straight rye whiskey finished in barrels that once contained their Singularity #1 liqueur. They also announced plans to build a new cocktail bar adjacent to their distillery, which will open reportedly sometime this year.

“I think that in many ways 2020 may have been our busiest year so far, which feels great considering we just celebrated our fifth anniversary,” said Max Lents, BSC co-founder and CEO, in a prepared statement. “We’re proud to be able to finish it off with a new and exciting version of our flagship product.”

The new 100 proof Toasted Barrel Finish Post Epoch Rye Whiskey is unique in that it spent the last year of its three-year aging process in an American oak barrel with, according to the official announcement for this release, “an interior exposed to lower and more gradual heat creating a toasted layer; a technique usually used for wine.” The toasted barrel finish lets the whiskey fuse more deeply with the wood cask, lending a more smooth mouthfeel to the liquid and bringing its caramel notes to the front.

Bottles of Toasted Barrel Finish Post Epoch Rye Whiskey are currently available in person at Baltimore Spirits Company’s distillery in the Union Collective building in downtown Baltimore. Customers in Maryland and Washington D.C. can also order the whiskey for delivery through the BSC website.

This distillery, for those that don’t know it, was founded in 2015 by friends Ian Newton (CFO), Max Lents (CEO) and Eli Breitburg-Smith (Head Distiller). Spirits from Baltimore Spirits Company are said to “express the culture, chorus, and meaning of Baltimore, restoring an industry of rye whiskey and spirits manufacturing to Maryland. In their new, state-of-the-art distillery located in the Baltimore Union Collective building, they combine modern distillation techniques with Old World craftsmanship to create expressive spirits that can only come from bold, forward-thinking experimentation.”
