New Andalusia Whiskey Single Malt Made With Texas Grown Grain

Texas grown barley, malted in the Lone Star State, is the basis for Andalusia Whiskey Co.’s newest single malt.

The grain is grown in the Panhandle and sent to be malted by TexMalt in Fort Worth, which is an important step in the whiskey making process.

In a news release from Andalusia Whiskey, they said that 99 percent of craft beer and malt whiskey produced in Texas is brewed with grain that’s not from the Lone Star State. While barley can be farmed in Texas, malting is a separate step performed by large facilities traditionally found in Northern states.

In the last five years, however, several small maltsters have opened in Texas that process malted barley grown in the Panhandle, near Amarillo and the farms near Palo Duro Canyon.

In fact, Andalusia was inspired to name their first Texas-grain single malt “Palo Duro Single Malt Whiskey” and will make it an annual release. It will continue to be made with 100 percent Texas grown and malted barley. Each annual release will showcase a different Texas malster and whiskey style.

The 2021 premiere of the Palo Duro Single Malt Whiskey is made with Texas grown and malted grains, then smoked with peachwood from Pink Tractor Farms in Blanco, Texas.

“We are excited to showcase a whiskey that has undergone the entire process in Texas,” said Ty Phelps, Andalusia co-founder, in a prepared statement.

Andalusia mashed and distilled this first batch in 2018, then aged the whiskey three years in new #4 char American oak barrels. This batch of single malt is bottled at 100 proof and comes at a suggested retail price of $69 per 750ml bottle.

The Palo Duro Single Malt Whiskey will be available for purchase at the distillery or online for pick up on site.
