Michter’s Readies Barrel Strength Version Of Its Rye Whiskey

michters-barrelryeThe Micther’s American whiskey label, whether you love it or not, has a knack for kicking out now and again limited edition whiskies which, at least amongst the older aged bottlings, can become highly sought after by collectors. It is hard to say whether its newest planned limited offering, a cask strength version of its rye whiskey, will fall into the tough to track down crowd, but Michter’s I imagine would hope so.

The new Michter’s US*1 Barrel Strength Rye is being released on what’s described as a limited basis, though how limited exactly isn’t mentioned. It is a stronger version of the label’s US*1 Single Barrel Rye, which itself clocks in at 84.8 proof. The barrel strength expression, by contrast, will come in somewhere in the neighborhood of 108 proof. According to Michter’s,

the barrel entry proof for the product was 103 proof, a strength that Michter’s believes will yield a richer, smoother product than a higher entry proof would. After aging, the barrel proof for the majority of barrels of this first release ranged between 108 proof to 110.8 proof. The single highest proof barrel reached a strength of 113 proof.

Should you desire to track down a 750 ml bottle of this, expect to pay $75 when it debuts this spring.

Cask Fraud Addressed in Scottish Parliament

The potential impacts of cask investment fraud on the scotch whisky industry was discussed in the Scottish Parliament in April 2024, hopefully paving the way for more regulation within the industry.
