stone-appleThere is a legend about Buffalo Bill Cody’s favorite cocktail being something known as the Stone Fence, which combined apple cider and rye whiskey. Mississippi River Distilling Company in Iowa has drawn on this for inspiration in crafting a seasonal whiskey now in its second year of release that will help keep you nice and toasty during the cold days of winter.

Stone Fence Apple Cider Whiskey, according to the distillery, combines their Cody Road Rye Whiskey with fresh pressed apple cider from an Iowa apple orchard. The folks at this whiskey making outfit had apparently been talking about making something along the lines of an apple brandy when they stumbled across an article about Cody and his cocktail preferences.

Last year’s batch of this clocked in at 80 proof, and this year’s offering looks to be pretty close to that at 70 proof. It comes in a 375 ml bottling and is a limited edition release of only around 2,500 bottles. There was no immediate word on price, but last year it seemed to be hovering at close to $20.

Tasting notes on it are limited but from what I’ve been able to gather from the 2013 offering from Mississippi River Distilling is that “the spiciness of rye marries perfectly with the sweetness of the fresh apple cider.”
