J. Rieger Releases 2022 Edition Of Bottled in Bond Straight Rye Whiskey

Kansas City-based J. Rieger & Co. recently announced the release of their 2022 Bottled in Bond Straight Rye Whiskey.

This new expression, barreled in 2016, is a 100-proof rye available now at spirit retailers in Kansas and Missouri, as well as at the distillery.

J. Rieger started its distilling operations in 2015, and released their first Bottled in Bond Straight Rye Whiskey last year.

A statement from J. Rieger explains that the 2022 edition has a mash bill of 96% rye and 4% malted barley and it was milled, distilled, aged for six years, and bottled at the Missouri-based distillery.

“After the success of our first Rieger’s Bottled in Bond Straight Rye Whiskey in 2021, we are thrilled to release the 2022 expression,” said Ryan Maybee, co-founder at J. Rieger & Co. “We are excited to be releasing twice as many bottles this year compared to 2021 and look forward to seeing continued growth and producing more high caliber spirits for years to come.”

J. Rieger’s distiller’s notes show the new rye whiskey features aromas of caramelized orange, baked bread, flowery notes of orange blossom and cut grass with flavors of toasted cedar, five spice, salty sunflower seeds, and cinnamon.

The palate features notes of chocolate-covered cherries, buttered popcorn, and a lingering spicy fruit jam character, reminiscent of a cherry cola. It has a long finish with drier notes of sage, mint, and toasted coconut.

J. Rieger & Co. was originally founded in 1887 in Kansas City’s West Bottoms Livestock Exchange district, but was forced to close in 1919 with the advent of Prohibition.

In 2014, 95 years after Prohibition, the brand was relaunched by business partners Ryan Maybee, co-founder of The Rieger and Manifesto, and Andy Rieger, the great-great-great-grandson of Jacob Rieger.

The current distillery is in the historic Electric Park district of the East Bottoms within Kansas City. The core product line includes Kansas City Whiskey, Midwestern Dry Gin, Caffe Amaro, and Premium Wheat Vodka.
