High West’s High Country American Single Malt Returns

Utah’s High West Distillery recently said it is bringing back one of its favorites, High Country American Single Malt, for a winter release.

A statement from High West explains that this expression is their contribution to the evolving category of American Single Malt Whiskey.

High Country is aged 2-8 years, is unfiltered, and is 100% copper-pot distilled and blended at the distillery high up in the Wasatch Mountains of Utah.

High West looked to pay homage to the famed single malt whiskies of Scotland, and craft a unique version of an American single malt.

According to the whiskey makers, the aim was for a robust, flavor-forward profile more typical of American whiskeys.

Their High West style, High Country American Single Malt is distilled “on-the-grain,” meaning they leave the grain in during fermentation and distillation, instead of filtering it out.

In the tradition of American and Scottish whiskey making, High West uses both freshly-charred and second-use oak barrels during the maturation stage. These techniques produce a whiskey with a more distinctive American quality with a heavier mouthfeel, roasted malt character, and balanced complexity.

High Country American Single Malt distiller’s notes:

  • Price: $79.99.
