Dad’s Hat Unveils First Made In State Pennsylvania Straight Rye Whiskey In Over 25 Years

dad's hat straight ryeIf you are into craft rye whiskey, particularly that from Pennsylvania, you likely know about Dad’s Hat Rye. It is produced in small batches by Mountain Laurel Spirits out of Bristol, Pennsylvania, using locally sourced ingredients. The distillery has three main products available that are all rye centric, and recently has added in a limited edition of what’s said to be the first straight rye made in its home state in over a quarter of a century.

Dad’s Hat Pennsylvania Straight Rye Whiskey follows a straight rye formula that is defined by the distillery as a “rye grain whiskey that has been aged in new oak barrels for at least two years.” The first single barrel release of this is being made available exclusively in Pennsylvania through the Pennsylvania Liquor Control Board’s web store. Specifics of this release indicate that it was aged 26 months in a new charred American oak barrel after being distilled from “a mash bill of 80% local rye grain” and other ingredients.

This first bottling of this farm to bottle straight rye from Dad’s Hat, which clocks in at 95 proof, is pricing for around $60 and is a very limited edition. The distillery said it plans to later expand availability nationwide. As for this first release, tasting notes for it are below courtesy of Mountain Laurel.

Well balanced, spicy rye with a rich malt edge. Deep color reminiscent of a classic Monongahela Red with a nose redolent with malt sweetness and dried fruit. Rye spice sparkles throughout yielding to a long finish with hints of vanilla, tobacco and light wood notes.
