California’s Wright & Brown Debuts A Bottled in Bond American Single Malt

Wright & Brown Distilling Co. is a relatively young distillery based out of Oakland, California. It is their claim that they have returned “to traditional methods to create exciting new California spirits that will stand the test of time.” The entire distilling process is said to be done in house, “from milling the grain to mashing, fermenting, distilling, barrel-aging and bottling.” A number of whiskeys already exist in their product portfolio, and the newest recently announced adds to this in the form of a rather interesting American single malt.

The new Wright & Brown Bottled in Bond American Single Malt Whiskey, according to those behind it, is made from a mash bill of 100% non-GMO malted barley that’s sourced from California, Washington and Ireland. Made on the distillery’s 250 gallon, Vendome all copper pot still, it is currently their oldest whiskey to date, having been barrel aged for at least 4 and a half years.

Information from Wright & Brown indicates this whiskey, distilled initially back in 2015 and since then aging in 53 gallon charred oak casks, meets the requirements for the bottled in bond designation. Of the emerging American single malt category bottled in bond is extremely rare – to the knowledge of those who produced it, to date it is only the second one thus far released from a craft distillery.

Wright & Brown Bottled in Bond American Single Malt Whiskey, bottled at 100 proof, looks to be available now for an average price of nearly $100 per 750 ml bottle. Limited official tasting notes suggest “it is rich and malty with notes of dark chocolate and toasted coconut and a sweet caramel finish. At 100 proof, it has a nice level of heat and a long, lingering finish.”
