Broken Barrel Offers Up Its First 100% American Single Malt Whiskey

Broken Barrel, known for an unusual whiskey finishing technique of adding broken barrel staves into a tank holding mature whiskey to further age it, recently debuted its first 100% American single malt whiskey.

The new expression, according to those behind it, is called Luciferous. It follows the traditional model in which Broken Barrel produces its offerings. As mentioned above, once aged a minimum of two years, barrels are dumped into a large tank. Then the team adds broken barrel staves to further age and finish the whiskey.

For this particular bottling, the Broken Barrel team combined (80%) Amaro barrels and (20%) French Oak staves to impart what’s described as “stronger fruit and chocolate notes to compliment the expected heat of the over 120 proof whiskey.”

Broken Barrel Luciferous, pricing around $70 per 750 ml bottle, is a limited edition release drawn from four barrels for a total of just 780 bottles. The base whiskey for it was sourced from MGP and has a mash bill of 100% malted barley.
