Jeff Whisky samples the experimental Perpetuity Blended Scotch Whisky Batch III, an ecclectic mix of single grain and single malt whiskies.

Tasting Notes:

About:
The third batch from The Leith Export Co Perpetuity infinite blended scotch Whisky which is a mix of single grain and malt scotch with a bottle release of 1,200. Like an infinity bottle at a larger level, they produce their blend to release half and then repeating the process again for further batches.
Appearance:
A light yellow gold with quite a thin viscosity when swirled in the glass.
Nose:
A quite sweet grain heavy nose with plenty of white chocolate, marshmallows and there is almost a whiff of bonfire peat smoke. Aromatic with rum and raisin ice cream melting on top of apple strudel.
Palate:
A thin texture carrying some quite soft and subdued malt notes with a ginger and black tea bitter taste at the back of the tongue. A sulfury lead sherry influence similar to a blown out matchstick combined with tinned pineapple in syrup and poppyseeds.
Finish:
A herbal medium length finish which focuses on the dry, bitter and slight astringent tannins hanging on the roof of your mouth.
Comments:
While a highly exciting concept which takes exploration further than traditional solera maturation found across whisky like the Glenfiddich 15 year old, this batch feels that it has been taken over by some overly sulfury sherry influenced stock. Still will be exciting to see what batch 4 brings.

How Is The Perpetuity Blended Scotch Whisky Batch II Made?

This whisky is made in a similar way to Glenfiddich 15 year old, and The Loch Fyne Living Cask. A combination of multiple casks being slowly married together over time to create something different with every release is a very fun way to make your blended whisky stand out as something a little special.

This process can involve using some younger and older casks of malt and grain to unify together for a limited edition release every time. This is actually quite an exciting way to buy an affordable one-off release and compare them in the future. This batch has some lingering sulfur notes, it’s something that won’t appeal to everyone, sure. But if you don’t mind a little hit of sulfur on your whisky, plus that very vibrant grain nose it has, this could still be something very cool to have in your arsenal of alcohol.

How Should You Drink It?

As always, you should try this neat first. That is the way you can best understand the flavors moving around in the glass.

However, if you’re a little bit more adventurous and want to try something a little different, you should probably try making an Old Fashioned with Perpetuity Blended Scotch Whisky Batch III. Grab yourself 2oz of this whisky, and mix that down in a mixing jug or in a glass with ice, alongside 1oz of sugar syrup (lower it for personal taste), and a few dashes of bitters of your choice. I’d use orange or peach bitters to counteract those sulfur notes. Decant this into a glass if you haven’t made it in one already, and serve with a nice garnish of orange or lemon peel.

Final Thoughts on The Perpetuity Blended Scotch Whisky Batch III?

This is a fun and experimental way to see what Port of Leith Distillery might do in the future. If you want to get your hands on something that will change every time you try it, regarding the batch, this is a perfect way to have a cool selection of bottles and liquids side by side.
