Tasting Notes

About:

Launched to celebrate the 200th anniversary of Johnnie Walker in 2020, this limited edition of Blue Label focuses on blending spirits from eight distilleries all who were active in 1820. This blend is made up from the following eight Scotch distilleries: Oban, Blair Athol, Lagavulin, Teaninich, Port Dundas, Brora, Cambus and Carsebridge.
Appearance:
Light copper in colour which has been artificially enhanced with caramel colouring. Displaying quite impressive beading around the glass for a 40% abv release.
Nose:
The nose has a strong coastal and maritime note, mixing sea spray, brine and wet pebbles. There is a soft smoke which highlights the fruity notes like mango, oranges and strawberry jam.
Palate:
With a good viscosity it carries plenty of flavour including baked apple crumble, salted butter and hedgerow fruits like blackberries. A slightly savoury meaty note like lamb cooked in rosemary with a pleasant smoky note.
Finish:
A mid to long length finish with lots of sweet blackcurrant cough sweets and ground pepper.
Comments:
Highlighting some forgotten distilleries, including the rarely talked about Carsebridge Lowland grain distillery, this certainly has a bit more intrigue than the standard Blue Label release and is reflected in the liquid. A highly enjoyable premium blend with an interesting backstory.
