Tasting Notes

About:

A Lagavulin 16 Year Old single malt scotch whisky. This particular release is a White Horse bottling from the late 1980s, presented at 43% ABV. Being an old release, it is now harder to find but, when you come across it, a 700/750ml bottle will retail for hundres of dollars, with the 1L bottles pushing $1,000. Sampled via a Cheaper By The Dram 30ml miniature, an affordable way to try a vintage whisky.

Appearance:
Medium gold. Viscous in the glass with prominent, slow legs.
Nose:
Handfuls of malted barley in the sunlit malt house. Soft gentle peat complements the malted barley. Red apples, autumnal pears and forest berries. A gentle caramel sweetness, reminiscent of childhood Caramel chocolate bars. A little vanilla, a touch of oak.
Palate:
Medium mouthfeel. Quality malt character at the fore. Gentle peat adds more of a warm, earthy quality than overt smoke. Autumnal apples and pears together with redcurrants and dried orange slices. A touch of Islay iodine. Caramel stroopwafels. Oak, vanilla, and woody spice. Alcohol is well integrated.
Finish:
Medium finish with malt biscuits, gentle, earthy smoke, and red apples. Red berries fade into a dry, almost savory, finale.
Comments:
A quality old release where the beauty of the malt is delicately balanced by restrained, earthy peat. The Islay influence is there, but not as prominent as you may find with more modern releases. Delicious.
