WhistlePig The Boss Hog X: The Commandments review

Tasting Notes

About:

Canadian straight rye whiskey, aged in new American oak and finished in craft mead casks and aromatic resin barrels; bottled between 105.3 and 107 (52.6 and 53.5% ABV); suggested retail price of $599.99.
Appearance:
A distinct honey-golden amber color shines in the glass, highlighted by excellent leg structure and nice viscosity.
Nose:
This is like standing in a springtime flower garden as bees buzz around and the sun shines – rich notes of honey, apricot, creme brulee, butterscotch, maple sugar, and, deep within to just the slightest notice, a little bit of peppery spice.
Palate:
Wow! Did I say wow? Yes, WOW! This complexity is unlike any other rye I’ve had in recent memory. Decadent notes of apricot, honey, almond paste, brown sugar, vanilla, black pepper, and maple syrup dance together in a lavish waltz on my palate.
Finish:
Sweet and spicy slide down my throat in an impressive acrobatic maneuver, leaving a trail I want to follow and hope will linger longer than it does.
Comments:
I had my doubts when I first cracked open this review sample – I know WhistlePig can pull most things off, but these two finishing cask types, particularly the aromatic resin barrels, are way off the beaten path, perhaps too much for even them. Having now done the review, I stand corrected. Another winner is crowned.
