Rabbit Hole Founder's Collection Mizunara Oak review

Tasting Notes

About:

A 15-year-old Kentucky bourbon finished for over 11 months in rare Japanese Mizunara oak casks. It is bottled at 51.9% ABV and priced at $1,500.
Appearance:
This shows on the darker side of amber in glass, having moderate legs and excellent viscosity.
Nose:
There’s an intense oak presence right at the opening of smelling this, almost overshadowing the other aromatics of sweet vanilla, ripe apricots, creme brûlée, a healthy amount of oranges and a back note consideration of brown sugar.
Palate:
This hits the oak hard and fast at first sip, but not in an overly oaky way—more like a pleasant washing over of the palate. After you consider this momentarily, it opens more into some rich considerations of plums, coriander, caramel, a bit of vanilla, cinnamon, and a luscious banana tangent.
Finish:
The finish here waxes and wanes as it seeks a conclusion after a fulfilling tasting, leaving a decided desire for more that’s met with a long end run.
Comments:
Rabbit Hole has always been known for delivering whiskeys with unique profiles, and Founder’s Collection Mizunara Oak is certainly no exception. It is well-rounded in every facet, and for those with over $1k lying around, it is a nice bottle.
